We are searching for a Research Scientist to support New Product Development (NPD) and the organization's analytical testing needs. This position is part of the R&D team supporting technical projects that grow Armstrong’s product portfolio and reports to the Manager of NPD.

 What you'll be doing:

  • Mechanical properties testing, materials characterization, and analytical testing to support development
  • Analyzing data with statistical software and reporting.
  • Pilot plant support of major NPD projects
  • Ownership of key technical development areas as part of a larger new product development project
  • Working as part of a team to develop new products, improve test methods, evaluate competitor products, and create new intellectual property
  • Statistical data analysis, documentation, and reporting of findings
  • Qualify recycled materials for performance and safe use in our products
  • Provide updates on project work and issues
  • Order materials and supplies as needed for project work
  • Works with vendors as needed to support projects and troubleshoot equipment
  • Ownership of testing equipment including calibration, supplies, and maintenance.
  • Strong commitment to maintaining safe practices including SOP’s, chemical inventory, labeling, and housekeeping
  • Travel to plants or vendors as needed in support of new product development


What you'll bring to the table:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Science Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, or related field
  • Knowledge of statistics, how to analyze data, and create data visualization to guide decision making
  • Experience using analytical equipment and excellent lab technique when preparing samples for testing
  • Able to support multiple projects and work within a larger team
  • Drive to complete tasks and push projects forward to meet deadlines
  • Desire to learn from colleagues and independently to expand the team’s knowledge and skills
  • Willingness to support teammates and prioritize team goals
  • Strong attention to detail, while understanding the big picture
  • Great problem solver and process troubleshooter
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, especially MS Excel
  • Effective writing for technical reports
  • Familiarity with Minitab or similar statistical software


We'll be excited if you have:

  • Master’s degree in Materials Science Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, or related field
  • Experience in the resilient or multi-layer flooring industry
  • Background in polymeric materials processing, testing, and theory
  • Experience with DMA, DSC, TGA, TMA, GPC, MP-AES,  FTIR, GC/MS, LC/MS TOF, or microscopy
  • Experience with UV cured coatings and coatings testing
  • Experience operating pilot plant equipment
  • Manufacturing processes, experience in a plant environment is a plus                 
  • Experience in DOE and DMAIC processes
  • Knowledge and skill in synthesis of monomers, oligomers, and polymers as well as physical characterization of the same


Candidates must be willing and able to travel to various locations both within and outside the United States.
