Armstrong Flooring Industries located in Kankakee, Illinois has a need for  Maintenance Mechanics to join our Afternoon (2:15 pm to 10:30 PM) and Night (10:15 pm to 6:30 am) shifts.  Do you have at least three (3) years of maintenance mechanic experience in a manufacturing facility where you repaired and modified production equipment, read mechanical drawings, used control systems, and worked safely?  If so, then you might be a perfect fit for one of our positions!


The Kankakee Plant manufactures residential and commercial resilient tile.  With multiple production lines and a history of steady, consistent employment, there are plenty of opportunities to put your mechanical maintenance skills to the test.  We are seeking qualified candidates to join our team who have a demonstrated record of reducing operational downtime by using their skills in trouble-shooting, fabricating, developing preventive maintenance schedules, and working closely with production operators.  Does this describe you? Position Description:

Under the general guidance of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for providing direct production line support by working closely with production operators to understand and reduce equipment maintenance issues. This position will help to identify and evaluate projects to support maintenance goals such as reducing operational downtime and overall maintenance costs.  Additionally, this position will troubleshoot and evaluate equipment performance and reliability, recommend changes in equipment or installation specifications to simplify assembly and maintenance.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Builds, tests, troubleshoots, repairs, and modifies machinery and parts, components, and systems according to instructions.


  • Demonstrates a positive safety attitude, meets or exceeds safety requirements on the job, and shows awareness of conditions that affect the safety of others.


  • Actively participates with others to solve problems and contributes to team effort.


  • Applies direct knowledge and work experience in the areas of control systems, conveyor lines, power drives, piping, and robotics to solve complex equipment issues.


  • Past record of fabricating parts and equipment as well as using laser alignment tools.


  • Utilizes mechanical drawings to learn and assess production equipment problems.


  • Develops and maintains positive and cooperative relationships and coordinates projects with Electrical Technician and Production Associates.



Required Qualifications:

  • At least three years of demonstrated industrial maintenance mechanic experience in a manufacturing setting.


  • Must be able to work 2nd or 3rd shift hours (depending on shift availability at time of hire) and weekends. Must be available to work overtime on any shift.


  • Experience reading and understanding mechanical drawings.


  • Intermediate math skills which include using addition, subtraction, decimals, geometry, and volume.


  • Ability to complete a written maintenance skills assessment prior to hire.


  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.


  • Self-starter who can function in a semi-autonomous environment.


  • Ability to climb ladders and walk catwalks, etc., in order to monitor, direct and validate equipment and installations.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of demonstrated industrial maintenance mechanic or millwright experience in a manufacturing setting.


  • Experience working on capital projects and equipment installations.


  • Familiarity with preventive and predictive maintenance scheduling.


  • Skill with using SAP for work orders.


  • Past practice of interacting with and taking feedback from production operators to ensure equipment issues are addressed.
